Collapse the Wave Function

On the paralysis of keeping options open forever. At some point you have to commit to a direction and see what happens. The best outcomes come from depth, not breadth.

I have a tendency toward maintaining optionality in life decisions. Randy Pausch advises delaying choices until necessary, but I’ve observed a drawback: avoiding commitment seems to scatter mental focus.

Indecision creates a weird form of regression to the mean that undermines thinking quality and productive action. As a remedy, I’ve adopted what I call “collapsing the wave function” for 2024—borrowing quantum mechanics terminology as a metaphor for committing to decisions rather than remaining in states of perpetual possibility.

My goal is to stop living in a superposition afraid to commit to stuff and instead make deliberate choices that sharpen both thinking and behavior.
